Michael Lewis O'Sullivan
A Celebration of the Life of Michael Lewis O'Sullivan
20/11/1940 - 3//8/2007
Michael, or Mick as he was largely known, was born in the Victorian Mallee, and being
a farmer, he was well attuned to the rhythms of life; the cycles of growth &
regrowth; birth & death.
During the past 12 months when it became apparent that Michael’s condition was
terminal, the continuation of this large family was assured with the arrival of
6 new little treasures:
our grandson Timothy, whose 1st birthday it is tomorrow, nephew Oskar
and nieces Clio, Ava-Mae, Rose and, just a few hours after
Michael died, Mia entered the world.
Michael’s brother Brian celebrates his birthday today and at first, I thought
it inappropriate to hold a funeral on a family member’s anniversary but with
such a large mob, it was almost unavoidable.
In a way it is tidy.
Michael had a passionate interest in politics, as did close family members who
predeceased him; now that he has joined his parents Jack & Sylvie,
sister-in-law Kay, brother Tim and sister Frances,
I’m pretty sure there’ll be some sparks flying out there!
We moved to Brisbane two and a half years ago, something Michael always wanted to do.
In that short time he became a fully-fledged Queenslander as he met the two
most important criteria: having geckoes live behind your pictures and being able to
separate a mossie coil without breaking it.
I would like to thank Fr. John, our wonderful neighbours over there in
Whitby St., my very supportive work colleagues at the Alzheimers Association
and Burnie Brae Respite Centre who accommodated my somewhat erratic work hours,
nephew Ben and cousin Fiona, the marvellous palliative care team at
Prince Charles Hospital, Blue Care nurse Bev and my wonderful
children, particularly Rebecca & Kate who helped me nurse Michael in his last week.
And with love,
I thank all of you here for coming along to help celebrate Michael’s life.
